When moving from Mandeville, Hammond, New Orleans, or beyond, you pack items with the utmost care. You’ll probably use newspapers, bubble wrap and sturdy boxes to ensure the safe arrival of your belongings in your new home. However, there are some things you should not pack when moving.
If you plan to hire professional movers in New Orleans, there are some items that are hazardous, perishable and/or ‘non-allowable.’ Do you know what they are? This list should help you make the choice of whether to pack or not pack certain things.
1. Some Important Valuables
Many items should be kept on your person, rather than leaving them for the movers to do for you. Here’s a mini list of items that you do not want to get lost among the piles of belongings:
- Photo albums
- Special artwork
- Anything irreplaceable
- Important electronics
- Credit or debit cards
- Precious paperwork (i.e. – Birth certificates, tax paperwork, etc.)
Because of the climates we have in Louisiana, our Slidell movers do not recommend putting household plants on our moving trucks. It gets hot in the moving truck. Your precious plants also can’t withstand the jolting and jostling, especially if boxes were to shift during the ride. You don’t want to take any chances of boxes or furniture falling on top of them. If you’re not ready to part with the plants, ask your friends or relatives to care for them while you are transitioning. Or, consider donating the plants to schools, churches, hospitals, or nursing homes.
3. Medication for You and Your Pet
We simply cannot take any chances when it comes to medications or prescriptions, so while packing your bathroom and cabinets, please take them out and keep them on your person. This goes for your pet, too. Talk to your doctors and the vets for your furry companions. You must transfer the prescription for both of you before moving into your new home.
4. Perishable Food
It goes without saying, but when there is a strong possibility of damage, spoil, or attracting insects to your well-packed boxes, don’t take any chances. Avoid wasting your time packing food items during your move.
If you have guns, firearms, fireworks or toxic substances, do not pack them for your Hammond moving company; we simply cannot take them on our moving trucks throughout Louisiana.
6. Dispose of Flammable Items
The local fire department might suggest how to dispose of items such as gasoline, aerosol, paints, and so on. These should also not be packed.
7. Bathroom liquids
Some of the liquids in your bathroom – such as soap, shampoo, hair coloring systems, etc. – can be very hazardous. Therefore, you should either donate them or give them away to friends and family.
Finally, it is useful to ask your moving company to initiate the non-allowable checklist before you start packing. This will help you save time and frustration on moving day.
