After choosing the right storage company, you will next have to decide what size your space should be. For many people, it can be tough to imagine just how large a 5 ft. X 10 ft. unit really is. Is it too small? Too big? Perhaps you will need an 8 ft. X 10 ft. space or even 10 ft. X 12 ft., which is really large. If you have a big house, then the latter might be the easy choice. However, storage unit prices are based on a per square foot rate, which is rented monthly.
You might find some storage facilities will offer incentives to keep you renting as long as possible. For example, they might waive the deposit of the first month’s rent if you sign a commitment to rent the storage unit for a minimum of six months. Or, they might give you a free month with similar terms. Whatever the promotion or special they are running, you will first need to know how much space you need to fit your belongings.
Here are some simple guidelines to help you avoid the guessing game. After all, you don’t want to rent one that is too small and then need an upgrade later. This would be burdensome and time-consuming. First, gather the belongings that you will be putting in storage. If you don’t have them ready quite yet, then just clear a space in the middle of your garage and use boxes to resemble the things you will be moving to storage. Next, use tape or yardsticks, etc. to draw a big square in the garage. Start with the 5 ft. X 10 ft. measurement and then move the items to that taped area. Make sure you do not stack them too high, but just for the purposes of the demonstration, you should make it realistic. If the 5 ft. X 10 ft. seems too small, go to the next size; and so forth. Keep in mind that most storage units have ceilings of about 8 ft., which means you can only go so high.
You should also avoid using garbage bags instead of boxes because they lack ventilation. Your clothes or paperwork, etc. will literally mildew in the bag, rendering them worthless and not worth storing. Use boxes. You can call Atmosphere Movers to get boxes, or most of the storage facilities will have some you can buy. Once you visually see how much stuff you need to move to storage, then you should go in and make a reservation and pick up your key. Don’t forget to buy a padlock, as this is required by most storage facilities. If you don’t bring your own padlock, the storage company may charge you for one.
