Here are some useful tips to help you downsize most effectively:
1. Take Inventory
The first thing to do is take a close inventory of your belongings, before you even move and know how much space you have to move into. Make a list of the things that are actually important to you. Then make a list of the things that you could live without or could actually replace or downsize along with your living space.
2. Allow for Enough Time
Do you have a target move date? You’ll need a lot more than a few days or even a few weeks, but if you find yourself in a position of having to move quickly (i.e. – your house sells the day you put it on the market, etc.), then you had better get busy! Ideas to declutter include holding a yard sale, donating items you no longer use, giving lots of things away to friends and family or people who need them, or selling them on an app such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, etc.
3. Get Temporary Storage Space
If you have a lot of possessions, it can be difficult to move into a smaller place, especially if you need to move in a hurry. In this case, renting a storage unit nearby might be a great solution until you figure out what to do with some of those things you no longer need or have room for.
4. Start with Extraneous Items First
Once you start the moving process, start with the closets first. You can separate the junk and the things you are no longer using in the basement, garage, or spare room etc. Start with the main rooms first, because those items are the things you probably use the most.
5. Ignore Duplicate Items
Some items need to be close at your hand, no matter how large or small the space is you are moving into. If you find duplicate items too that you think you should not be attached to, this is a good time to get rid of them. For example, glassware, bedding and other items that are simply taking up space. People collect magazines, books and knick-knacks over the years, but when downsizing, you may need to really evaluate the items to determine those you need or use the most.
6. Get Organizational Totes and Shelving
In the new place, you don’t want to live with all the clutter you had in a larger space. A great solution for these eyesores is the totes, storage bins or cute buckets that will hold (and hide) the items that once took up too much room. Moving requires a lot of organization and de-cluttering.
7. Minimize Furniture
Take a tally of your furniture and whether it gets used a lot. If you have chairs or large sofas, benches, ottomans, entertainment centers or other furniture items that are filling up the rooms of your large home, this is the time to downsize and minimize. Do you really need a sectional couch in a small condo? Or a large dining room table? Just choose functionality and practicality over décor when you are on the quest for downsizing.
