Memorial day is upon us and so is moving season. Summer means college kids return home, school is out, so many families make their transition and the weather is more reliable. But if you move, you are more likely to be a victim of identity theft.
How to Avoid Identity Theft During a Move
- Change your address. Make sure that all of your credit cards, car loans and banks know your updated address immediately. Also, submit an official Change of Address Form through your local post office to ensure all mail is forwarded. The forward lasts from 6 months to a year so you can ensure most companies will be notified.
- Secure sensitive information and keep it with you during your move. Things such as tax forms and medical information, social security cards and birth certificates should all be locked up. Anything that has any sensitive information on it and is not going with you should be shredded. DO NOT just throw it away.
- Ensure that you moving company is bonded and insured and experienced. Atmosphere Movers has over 20 years of experience and is mostly repeat customers.
- Enroll in a monitoring service and check your credit report. There are various credit and address monitoring services available to help make sure your identity is protected. If you notice anything unusual, local authorities and banks should be contacted immediately.
