Changing your address is one of the most important things you must do when moving to a new home. Here’s how!
First double check your address to ensure you have the correct address. Once you have the correct address you need to decide if you are putting in a permanent or temporary change of address with the post office. Permanent change of address covers first class for up to 12 months and periodicals (magazines and newspapers) up to 60 days. After this time mail will be returned to sender. Temporary change of address includes the same for a time period of 15 days – 6 months. You can also get a premium forwarding service from the USPS for a small fee, all of your mail will be bundled and sent to you via Priority Mail every Wednesday.
You can change your address with the USPS three ways:
- Online – there is a $1 fee when changing an address online
- By phone by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS
- Asking your mail carrier or the Post Office for Form 3575 aka Change of Address Form
Don’t forget to change your address at the following locations:
- credit cards
- doctors and dentist offices
- government offices
- clubs and organizations
- DMV – drivers license, vehicle registration
- voters registration
- family and friends
Don’t forget to include everyone moving to the new address, and that it takes 7-10 days to for a change of address to take effect.
