Getting Your Louisiana Driver’s License

Getting Your Louisiana Driver's LicenseYou’re all moved into your new home and next on your to do list is getting your new Louisiana driver’s license or maybe changing your address or name. We broke down the steps to make it easy for you to navigate the OMV and get this much-needed item checked off your list.

Transferring From Out of State:

If you are transferring from out of state, you must get your new license within 30 days of establishing residency. The only exceptions to this are active duty military, your dependents and full-time students with a valid license. You must visit your local OMV in person.

The cost is $21.50 and a local fee up to $4 may apply.

You will need to bring:

  • valid out of state driver’s license
  • one primary document such as a certified birth certificate or passport
  • Social Security verification such as your social security card
  • proof of vehicle insurance

Minors 17 and under must also be accompanied by a custodial parent (domiciliary parent for joint custody) or legal guardian with picture ID and have a completed Certificate of Required School Attendance obtained from their school. Homeschooled students need to have either the Home Study Approval Letter or Registered Non-Public School: Registration Confirmation.

Changing Your Address:

You must change your address within 10 days of moving to a new address and appear in person at your local OMV office. You will need your current driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Homeschooled students need to have either the Home Study Approval Letter or Registered Non-Public School: Registration Confirmation. The cost is $13 and a local fee up to $4 may apply.

If your license expires within 90 days of changing your address, you will be required to renew your license at that time.

You need your current driver’s license, proof of insurance and original documentation that supports the name change such as a certified birth certificate, state certified marriage license, divorce decree, and probate court documents. If you have any other credentials such as a state issued ID card or mobility impaired hang tag, you will be required to change your name on those at the same time.
