Moving can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some easy ways you can save money while moving!
PURGE: The less you have to move, the less it’s going to cost from packing supplies to time involved. Rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in a year or your wouldn’t buy it today, either trash it, sell it or donate it. Varagesale is a great way to sell your items and places like the Metropolitan Center for Women and Children are always looking for donation.
Don’t Buy Boxes and Packing Material: Old newspapers, towels, blankets etc can be used to wrap breakables. Suitcases are great for moving clothes and books. Also, check with your local favorite store for boxes, most will allow you to take their boxes off their hands for no charge!
Shop Around: About 6-8 weeks before your move it’s time to start shopping around for moving companies. DIY moving may seem cheaper but by the time you pay for the rental, gas, food and drinks for friends that are helping, you may find a local moving company such as Atmosphere Movers may be just as affordable if not cheaper! Grocery Shop From Your Pantry and Freezer: Refrigerated and frozen foods are hard to move and can food is heavy. Make it easier and cheaper on yourself by eating what’s in your pantry and freezer before your move!
Packing Yourself vs Hiring Packers: While packing yourself can be cheaper and is a good way to save money while moving. Remember that most moving companies can’t insure boxes that they don’t pack, so if something breaks it’s on you to pay to replace it. Also packing takes time, lots of time, and time is money. So in the end hiring your moving company to also pack your belongings may be the way to go!
